Residential WSUD
North Shore and Town Centre, Townsville, Queensland
Client: Stockland
Stockland are in the process of delivering 5000+ residential dwellings at NorthShore, Townsville. The mild slopes and dispersive soils has meant that the urban design is strongly informed by WSUD.

DesignFlow has developed WSUD strategies for the Town centre and Precincts 5 and 6, which include biofiltration cells, green drainage spines and wetlands. A key stormwater quality management element of Precinct 5 development is the incorporation of 6 ha of wetlands to treat the majority of stormwater runoff. The wetlands are located in a sensitive and protected marine environment which has provided design opportunities to showcase the different wetlands and intertidal protected zone.

Constructed wetlands are still in their infancy in the dry tropics and pose unique design challenges, such as extended dry seasons. DesignFlow have designed two types of wetlands, a shallow ephemeral wetland (2 ha) and a deeper more permanent pool wetland (4 ha), to compare operating performance. Each wetland will use different vegetation species dependent on the seasonal operation.

The wetlands are currently in construction and planting trials are due to commence shortly.
